In 2009, President Obama announced his initiatives to double exports within five years and to reform the U.S. export control system. In 2010, the President issued a number of executive orders and policy statements designed to implement these objectives. The proposed reforms included a consolidated export enforcement approach, the development of a single list of controlled items and technologies, enhanced information technology systems, and a reduction in export licensing requirements. These pillars have been implemented with varying degrees of speed and success, while the administration continues to interface with Congress to pursue reform. How have these proposed and actual changes impacted the U.S. economy and national security? Have these initiatives and their implementation to date succeeded in increasing exports without a concomitant negative impact on national security? Will Congress entertain legislation that will bring to fruition the administration's goal of having a single export agency? And how will these efforts affect the country's industrial base from an acquisition, divestiture and manufacturing perspective?
The Executive Roundtable will review these and other related issues. Following the panel discussion, a representative from the U.S. government or the private sector will provide timely perspectives on the issues discussed.
